The Gathering
As the South West monsoon recedes in intensity and the mid year drought swings into full effect in the North Central Province, a spectacular event takes place along the banks of ancient Minneriya Tank. With the change of colour in the vegetation as the dry winds blow across the tank, many small herds of elephants from far off places gradually converge on the plains of Minneriya.
Activity in this area gathers momentum towards July. What commences as a trickle of elephants would grow to staggering numbers and the spectacular annual Gathering would be in full swing by early July.
In a country that has a population of 20 million people, it's amazing that we still find space for over 3000 elephants. What's more, over 300 of them star in this annual show which is a mind-blowing feature in this magical land of ours.
